Aluminum-Clad Wood vs All-Aluminum Windows: Choosing for High-End Residential Projects

Walk into the showroom of any serious European window brand and the material decision splits the range in two: all-aluminum thermal-break windows, and aluminum-clad wood. Both put a weatherproof aluminum face toward the rain. The difference is what you — and your client — see from inside the room.

For high-end residential projects the choice is rarely about which one is "better". It is about which material language fits the architecture, the climate, and the way the home will actually be lived in. This guide lays out the engineering facts behind both, so you can brief your manufacturer with confidence.

Two families, one philosophy

Both families start from the same principle: the exterior must shrug off decades of weather with zero maintenance, so aluminum carries the outside face.

All-aluminum system windows build the whole frame from multi-chamber thermal-break profiles — typically 1.8 mm wall thickness on our higher series — with polyamide barriers separating the interior and exterior shells. In our range the family runs from SERIES 87's flush frame-and-sash geometry, through SERIES 88's patented chambered profile and SERIES 100's genuine double thermal break, to SERIES 120's ultra-narrow mullion for uninterrupted glass. Triple glazing with argon (5+12A+5+12A+5) is standard across most of the family.

Aluminum-clad wood windows marry a solid red-oak interior to an exterior aluminum cladding. Our SERIES 90 and 102 use aluminum profiles from Qingdao Kangtai (Huajian Group) outside and engineered red-oak beams inside: the warmth of timber where it matters, the durability of aluminum where it rains.

Where all-aluminum windows win

  • Slender sightlines. Aluminum is structurally efficient, so frames can stay slim at large sash sizes — the reason minimalist facades are almost always all-aluminum.
  • Total colour freedom. The visible surface is the coating. Alongside standard RAL colours we run wood-grain foil finishes such as golden oak, so an aluminum window can even imitate timber from the inside if the design needs it.
  • Humidity without worry. Nothing to swell, dry out, or feed mould in coastal and high-humidity climates.
  • Whole-facade consistency. The same profile repeats identically across every opening — something architects value on larger buildings.

Where aluminum-clad wood wins

  • Interior warmth. Nothing else in fenestration reads like solid timber — red oak brings colour, grain and tactility no coating can replicate.
  • Different acoustics and comfort. Mass and layered construction change how a room feels — a qualitative difference that premium buyers notice immediately.
  • Design authority. In traditional, countryside or heritage-led architecture, timber windows are often a planning and aesthetic requirement.

The wood behind the window: why kiln drying matters

Timber windows fail when the wood moves after installation. That is why the specification detail worth interrogating is not the species — it is the conditioning.

Every timber beam in our SERIES 90 and 102 is finger-jointed into full-length lamination, de-resined, and kiln-dried for 45 days to a controlled 8–12% moisture content before any machining starts. That is not a marketing paragraph; it is the difference between a sash that stays true for decades and one that warps in its first winter. After machining, the interior is finished with five coats of German Dörma water-based lacquer — zero VOC — which matters twice: it protects the oak, and it keeps the factory's finish out of the client's indoor air.

Hardware and opening geometry

Both families in our range run German Roto hardware as the backbone. The difference is in the package:

  • SERIES 90 (clad wood): Roto hardware surface-mounted as standard — a configuration that even permits 180° opening for wide, fold-away access — with concealed hardware available as an option.
  • SERIES 102 (clad wood): the flagship of the line, with flush frame-and-sash geometry and fully concealed Roto hardware as standard for a clean, minimalist interior.
  • All-aluminum SERIES 87/88/93/100/120: concealed Roto or CMECH systems with Hoppe handles across the board, multi-point espagnolette locking standard, and flush frame-and-sash faces on the design-led series.

The practical point: hardware carries the sash every day, so keeping one proven hardware family across both options keeps maintenance and spare parts predictable.

How to choose

Use the building, not the brochure, to decide:

  1. Architecture first. Minimalist and contemporary → all-aluminum. Warm, classic or heritage-led → clad wood. If both appear in one development, don't force a single material across the site.
  2. Climate and exposure. Coastal humidity, salt air or tropical conditions push toward all-aluminum. Cold continental winters with heavy heating loads are where timber's interior warmth earns its keep.
  3. Interior design. Ask what the window will sit beside — plaster, stone and metal love aluminum; oak floors, wool textiles and linen curtains answer timber.
  4. Opening style. Both families come in tilt & turn, casement and fixed configurations, so material never constrains the ventilation plan.
  5. Maintenance expectations. All-aluminum is effectively zero-maintenance. Clad wood adds a periodic interior lacquer touch-up — a fair trade for clients who want timber.

Both lines are manufactured in the same 36,000 m² facility, under the same inspection regime, so the decision is purely material and aesthetic — not a quality gamble.
